Environmental information systems in malaria risk mapping and epidemic forecasting.
Every year between one and two million African children under five die of malaria. If one adds to this the contribution of malaria to all-cause infant mortality then clearly the burden of the disease is catastrophic--a disaster quietly happening each and every year. New tools are needed urgently to support those currently available for control of the disease. An effective vaccine remains elusiv...
متن کاملMapping Malaria Transmission Risk in Northern Morocco Using Entomological and Environmental Data
Malaria resurgence risk in Morocco depends, among other factors, on environmental changes as well as the introduction of parasite carriers. The aim of this paper is to analyze the receptivity of the Loukkos area, large wetlands in Northern Morocco, to quantify and to map malaria transmission risk in this region using biological and environmental data. This risk was assessed on entomological ris...
متن کاملMapping Environmental Suitability for Malaria Transmission, Greece
During 2009-2012, Greece experienced a resurgence of domestic malaria transmission. To help guide malaria response efforts, we used spatial modeling to characterize environmental signatures of areas suitable for transmission. Nonlinear discriminant analysis indicated that sea-level altitude and land-surface temperature parameters are predictive in this regard.
متن کاملMapping malaria risk in Bangladesh using Bayesian geostatistical models.
Background malaria-control programs are increasingly dependent on accurate risk maps to effectively guide the allocation of interventions and resources. Advances in model-based geostatistics and geographical information systems (GIS) have enabled researchers to better understand factors affecting malaria transmission and thus, more accurately determine the limits of malaria transmission globall...
متن کاملMapping Malaria Risk in Dakar, Senegal
Independent entomological variables and human socio-economic characteristics can influence the risk of malaria infection in urban areas, yet the imbalanced spatial distribution of infection remains in question. There is often a lack of simultaneous consideration of the factors responsible for the transmission of parasites. This work examines interactions between the entomological profile of urb...
